Meta (Facebook & Instagram) has strict rules about what kinds of audio can be used and monetised on its platform. If your release falls into any of the categories below, it may be blocked, demonetised, or cause account-level issues.
To avoid problems, do not include Meta in your release if your music matches any of the ineligible types listed on this page.
Content that is NOT considered music
These types of audio are not treated as music and are not allowed for use or monetisation on Meta:
Sound Effects (SFX)
Single sounds or audio effects such as:
Explosions, impacts, ambiences, button sounds, etc.
Any sound with no clear melody or musical structure
Spoken Word / Speech
Audio that mainly contains:
Talking, dialogue, storytelling
Poetry without melody
Motivational or spoken recordings
Podcasts / Radio Shows / Album Commentary
Interviews
Podcast episodes
Radio-style programs
Commentary tracks, intros, outros, skits
Music that is unauthorised for distribution
These types of tracks violate copyright rules and are not allowed:
Sound-Alikes
Tracks that:
Imitate a real artist’s voice, style, or sound
Try to “pass as” a famous artist
Mislead listeners into thinking the real artist is involved
Covers are allowed only if they are clearly original and properly licensed.
Covers that are too similar to the original may still be rejected.
Illegitimate Tracks
Music that uses other people’s recordings without permission, including:
Slowed down, sped up, reverbed versions
Edits of existing songs
Unauthorised sampled tracks
Music taken from Meta’s Sound Collection and re-uploaded as your own
Unauthorised AI-Generated Content
AI music is not allowed if it:
Uses or imitates a real artist’s voice without permission
Uses a real artist’s name, image, or identity
Makes it look like the artist is officially involved when they are not
If your AI track sounds like a real artist and pretends to be them, it is not allowed.
Unauthorised DJ & Extended Mixes
Not allowed:
DJ mixes
Continuous mixes
Live DJ sets
Full albums combined into one long track
Music that is not distinct or original enough
Public Domain Sound Recordings
Music where both:
The composition copyright has expired
AND the recording (master) copyright has expired
These recordings are not protected for monetisation on Meta.
Classical Music with Public Domain Compositions
Recordings of:
Public-domain classical works
Orchestral, choir, or traditional performances
These may be allowed for listening, but cannot be used for fingerprinting or monetisation.
Ambient, Meditation, Yoga & Sleep Music
This includes:
Soundscapes with little or no melody
Spa, relaxation, yoga, sleep, baby noise, white noise tracks
Generic artist or track names like “Relaxing Music,” “Meditation Sounds,” etc.
These tracks are commonly rejected on Meta.
Karaoke Recordings
Backing tracks with missing or removed vocals
Karaoke versions of popular songs
Instrumental versions are not the same as karaoke and may still be allowed.
Original AI-Generated Music (Monetisation Risk)
Even fully original AI-generated tracks:
May be rejected from monetisation
May trigger additional reviews or penalties
Music with no clear exclusive rights owner
These are not allowed because Meta requires exclusive rights for music:
Non-Exclusive / Royalty-Free Music
Do NOT include Meta if your track is:
Royalty-free music
Creative Commons
Subscription-based stock music
Licensed to multiple users
If you don’t exclusively own it, do not send it to Meta.
Production Music
Includes:
Stock music
Soundbeds
Trailer music
Production loops
Library music
If the artist name looks like a studio or library, this content is usually not allowed.
Content that violates safety rules
Harmful Content
Your music must NOT contain:
Personal private information
Hate speech
Sexual exploitation (adults or minors)
Graphic, sexual or violent content
Content promoting violence, terrorism, self-harm, or suicide
Discrimination based on race, religion, gender, or identity
Untagged Explicit Content
If your track includes:
Strong profanity
Graphic sexual content
Violence
You must mark it as explicit.
Fraudulent Content
This includes any music (AI or human-made) that:
Manipulates Meta’s systems
Steals from other creators
Attempts to earn money dishonestly
Is used in large-scale abuse or scam networks
This can lead to catalogue-wide penalties.
When you should EXCLUDE Meta from your release
You should exclude Meta (Facebook & Instagram) if your release is:

Production music / stock music
Meditation / ambient / sleep
Karaoke
DJ mixes
Public-domain classical
AI-generated
Spoken word / podcast

Important Warning
Repeated delivery of ineligible content to Meta can lead to:
Track removals

Will this affect other platforms?
No - ineligibility applies only to Meta. Other stores have their own rules.
My track was accepted before - why blocked now?
Meta’s detection systems get updated often. Older tracks can be flagged later.
