Yes, you can upload a cover. A cover song is a song that you performed and recorded yourself, but the music and lyrics were written by someone else. A cover song is a straightforward interpretation of a track and no significant changes have been made to neither the melody nor the lyrics.
How do I upload a cover in the app correctly?
- It has to be your own recording.
- You must fill in the original writers as writers.
You may NOT mention the original artist, not in the release text nor on the cover art.
Do I need a license?
You need a license for selling downloads of covers in the US, Mexico, Canada, India and Pakistan.
If you don't have a license, you have two options:
1. We don't distribute to Apple/iTunes and Google.
2. We don't distribute to the US, Mexico, Canada, India* nor Pakistan.
*For India, the original track must have been released more than 5 years.
If you have one cover song on an album with several tracks, the album is still affected by the cover song.
Where can I get a license?
When it comes to licensing, we frequently see our users using songfile.com (we are not affiliated, but there is a great deal of information on their site about the service they provide.)
Can I translate the lyrics for a cover?
Yes, but you need permission from the copyright holder. When you make a substantial change to a song, like a translation of the lyrics, you need the permission of the copyright holders as it is regarded as Derivative work and not a cover.
