Yes, you can upload a cover song (a song that you performed and recorded yourself, but the music and lyrics were written by someone else). A cover song is a straightforward interpretation of a track and no significant changes have been made to neither the melody nor the lyrics.
How to upload a cover song in the app correctly:
- The song has to be your own recording.
- You MUST fill in the original writers as writers.
- You must NOT mention the original artist in the release text nor on the cover art.
Do I need a license to put out a cover?
Yes. You will need a license for selling downloads of covers in the US, Mexico, Canada, India and Pakistan.
If you don't have a license, we have two options for you:
- We will NOT distribute your track to Apple/iTunes and Google.
- We will NOT distribute to the US, Mexico, Canada, India* or Pakistan.
*For India, the original track must have been released more than 5 years ago if you want to release music there.
Note: If you have one cover song on an album with several tracks, the album is still affected by the cover song.
Where can I get a license?
We frequently see our users using songfile.com we are not affiliated with this site, but there is a great deal of information on it about the licensing service they provide.
Can I translate the lyrics for a cover?
Yes, BUT you will need permission from the copyright holder. When you make a substantial change to a song like a translation of the lyrics, you need the permission of the copyright holders as it is regarded as Derivative work and not a cover.
